You can transfer a domain name from one account to another account at the same registrar. This process is relatively straightforward and it involves pushing the domain name from your account to the respective account.

Transferring a domain name to a different registrar is more involved and the process in outlined below.

1. Customer purchases domain name transfer
2. The customer must unlock the domain and retrieve an authorisation code from their current registrar, which is needed to initiate transfer with gaining registrar.
3. Gaining registrar sends an email to customer which contains an ID number. Key code and a link to confirm transfer
4. Customer confirms the transfer with the ID and key from the email. If the domain name requires the authorisation code it will be entered.
5. Gaining registrar sends a notification to losing registrar to transfer domain name.
6. Losing registrar sends confirmation for release of domain name
7. Customer confirms release with losing registrar
8. Losing registrar releases domain names to gaining registrar
9. A transfer success email is sent to notify the customer that the domain name is now located in their account.
10. Customer now has control over their domain name at the new registrar.
Sometimes your registrar may refuse to transfer your domain name, this maybe for the following reasons;
If you are having problems transferring you domain name to a new registrar you need to contact the original registrar in the first instance. If this does not resolve your disputes then you can ask the registrar you are transferring to, to initiate a violation of the Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy.
Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy is enforced by ICANN, however the resolution fees can be substantial so most registrars will strive to resolve the problem among themselves.
Note that you can not transfer domain names from one registrar to another if the domain names are less than 60 days older. However most registrars will allow you to do an internal transfer.
