What is a domain name?

A domain name is the internet address of a company. As a way of illustration -  think of what happens when you post a letter; in time it arrives at the intended address (well at least most of the time!).

Similarly a domain name points you to a company’s / organisation’s / individual’s presence on the internet.

Strictly speaking the domain name system is actually

a simplification of a more complex classification system that involves numbers called IP (Internet Protocol) addresses.
